There is a lot of misinformation online about “vegan” snacks in Korea.
Many products look vegetarian but actually contain hidden animal-based ingredients.
So I personally checked the ingredient labels and selected only snacks that are
✔️ No meat
✔️ No egg
✔️ No hidden animal ingredients
Here are REAL vegan Korean convenience store snacks you can safely enjoy.
--------------------------------------------------
1. Seaweed Chips (Kim Bugak) [김부각]
- No meat, no egg
- Light, crispy, and slightly sweet & salty
- Great as a snack or with makgeolli
- CU PB (private brand) product
✅There are many kim bugak products in Korea, but many contain animal ingredients.
If you go to CU, look specifically for the CU PB version. It is clearly vegan and also the cheapest option.
--------------------------------------------------
2. Dried Sweet Potato (Goguma Malangyi) [고구마 말랭이]
- No meat, no egg
- Mostly 100% sweet potato
- Chewy texture with natural sweetness
- Popular as a healthy or vegan snack
✅ Perfect to introduce as a “natural Korean snack” with no additives.
--------------------------------------------------
3. Nongshim Potato Chips – Original Flavor [포테토칩 오리지널]
- No meat, no egg (Original flavor only)
- Simple and classic potato chips
- Lightly salty and less greasy than many Western chips
- Easy to find at any Korean convenience store
✅Only the **Original flavor** is vegan-friendly.
Always check the ingredient list to make sure it contains:
Check the ingredients:
✔️ Potato
✔️ Oil
✔️ Salt
--------------------------------------------------
4. Sattobap [사또밥]
- No meat, no egg
- Grain-based snack (corn/rice)
- Light, crunchy, and slightly sweet
- A nostalgic Korean snack loved by locals
✅ It doesn’t look healthy, but the ingredient list makes it vegan.
--------------------------------------------------
✔✔Final Vegan Tip:
In Korea, “looks vegan” does not mean “is vegan.”
Always avoid products with:
- Beef or chicken powder
- Anchovy or seafood extract
- Egg yolk or whole egg
Ingredient labels are your best friend.
